Shorey: A fan of Doyle
Nicky Shorey has admitted that he does not expect former team-mate Kevin Doyle to join him at Aston Villa.
Villa signed Shorey from Reading earlier this month and have been linked with a move for Republic of Ireland international Doyle.
Royals manager Steve Coppell reiterated on Tuesday that there had been no new interest in the striker.
And Shorey believes Coppell would drive a hard bargain if Aston Villa decided to make a move before the close of the transfer window on 1st September.
"I think Reading will keep the majority of the lads who are there now," the left-back told the Birmingham Mail.
"The season has started and I think the gaffer has said he doesn't want to lose anyone now. The fees will probably go up anyway.
"Of course, if someone really wants someone then they will get it done but I think they will probably keep hold of everyone now and hopefully have a good season and see where that takes them - hopefully back in the Premiership."
Doyle scored just six goals as Reading were relegated last season and has yet to find the target this term, but Shorey believes he will soon find his best form.
Villa boss Martin O'Neill is understood to be on the lookout for a new forward and Shorey believes Doyle would fit the bill.
He said: "He is good, no doubt about it. Last season was one of those where as a team we weren't clicking in the right way, the way we were the year before.
"It goes like that some seasons. We tried to do enough to stay up but it wasn't to be.
"But he will come back to his top form and when he is on top form he is a real handful and a very good player."
